By producing oil and a wide range of high-quality oil products, PetroKazakhstan is able to sell its products both in Kazakhstan and abroad.
Kumkol oil commands a good price on the world markets, and meets Brent oil quality criteria. Since July 2006, with the introduction of the Atasu – Alashankou pipeline (Kazakhstan-Chinese pipeline), PetroKazakhstan oil has been supplied to China, which has significantly improved the company’s marking possibilities. PetroKazakhstan is currently able to supply about 2.7 million tons of oil per year to China using the pipeline, which is 94% of the company’s total oil exports. Trade relations in China are made predominantly with large Chinese oil refining companies in the north-west of the country. Some oil is exported to non-CIS countries by railway.
PetroKazakhstan also has access to the JSC KazTransOil East pipeline system, which it uses to transport oil to the Shymkent Oil Refinery for refining. PKOP refines about 2 million tons of oil per year at the refinery and then sells its products such as petrol, diesel, reduced fuel oil, aviation kerosene, vacuum gas oil and liquid gas. Every year the Shymkent Oil Refinery ships more than 3.8 million tons of oil products in Kazakhstan and overseas.
The main marketing priority for oil products is the domestic market, namely the country’s most densely populated areas such as the South Kazakhstan, Zhambul, Almaty, Kyzylorda Oblasts and also the East Kazakhstan and Karaganda Oblasts, the cities of Almaty and Astana. These areas make up 70% of total sales volumes.
Large and small fuelling stations and fuelling station networks, airports, power and gas companies, factories, transport organizations and farming businesses are Kazakhstan’s main corporate oil product consumers. Vacuum gas oil is sold for export to oil refineries, while liquid gas is sold for domestic purposes and for the petrochemical industry. Vacuum gas oil is exported mainly to Eastern Europe, while liquid gas is sold to Central Asian countries.
PetroKazakhstan either owns or leases in excess of 2,100 wagons or tanks.
